CALGARY – The chief of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency says the COVID-19 situation is improving in the city.

The number of active infections is now about 50 per cent of what it was at its peak earlier this month.

But Sue Henry told council Tuesday morning the number of people in ICUs is still concerning.

“Here in Calgary, we have 58 people in the intensive care unit after peaking at our highest on May 18 with 77. We have 218 folks currently in hospital, which, again, is an improvement from our peak of 269 just last week,” she said.

Henry says the vaccination rate in most communities is above 50 per cent, although they appear to be lower in the northeast.

“We continue to work to understand this variance, but we do know it is not for a lack of desire of residents to receive their shots.”

She points out appointments at the Genesis Centre — which serves those communities — are fully booked.

“There are some unique barriers for residents and communities that we continue to work with our partners to address so that we can make vaccines as accessible as possible for all Calgarians.”
