Private rooms, loved ones to be paired together: 42 recommendations made in report on Alberta’s LTCs

EDMONTON – Alberta says it will be making some big changes to long-term care in the province after the pandemic highlighted some major failings.

A 217-page report into care homes provided some key recommendations to the province that will help improve the quality of life for those living in continuing care facilities.

Some of the main recommendations that the province says it plans to address immediately include housing couples together in the same facilities whenever possible, enhancing public reporting on inspections, and phasing out shared rooms and creating private or semi-private rooms.

The report also includes notes from the pandemic to help inform future pandemic planning.

The province says there will be additional funding funnelled into senior care to support new buildings and to support care in Indigenous communities.

Over 7,000 people filled out online surveys which helped inform the review, as did nearly 100 focus group conversations and interviews, reviews of literature and best practices, a deep dive of data, and advice from an expert panel.
